Solar Energy and INDIA

To be environmentally benign energy services provided should have low greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However 85% of current primary energy driving global economies comes from the combustion of fossil fuels and consumption of fossil fuels accounts for 56.6% of all anthropogenic GHG emissions. Renewable energy sources play a vital role in providing energy services in a sustainable manner. The renewable energy sector is growing at a rapid pace all over the world and solar power holds answer to huge appetite of energy requirement.

Government of India has set a target for installation of 100 GW Solar Power plants by 2022 out of which 40 GW has to come from rooftop systems. Also the price of solar power has dropped drastically and it is economical to generate power through solar rooftop for commercial industrial institutional and residential consumers. Payback period is 5-6 years and life of solar plant is 25 years.

The roof space in government buildings including PSUs residences industries and institutions can prove very helpful. The electricity generated saves money hence reduced electricity bills generating green energy and reduces carbon footprint. There is 15% Government subsidy for selected categories and bank loans are available at the rate of housing loan from public sector banks. Also there is custom duty and excise duty exemption.

RBI has included renewable energy project under priority sector banking (i.e bank loans of upto INR 15 Cr for commercial borrowers and for individual households loan upto INR 10 Lakh is available). Bank of India Syndicate Bank Indian Overseas Bank SBI Dena Bank have given instruction to their branches to grant such loans. Many states (UP Karnataka WB Odhisa Delhi Uttarakhand etc.) have notified regulation for net metering.
